Julian Assange verschickt ein Paket - und die Welt reist mit
Sehr interessante Aktion: !Mediengruppe Bitnik (zu lesen als: “the not mediengruppe bitnik”) trackt in Echtzeit den Verlauf eines Pakets, das WikiLeaks-Gründer Julian Assange an den in Bahrain inhaftierten Menschenrechtsaktivisten Nabeel Rajab versendet hat. Eine im Päckchen installierte Webcam dokumentiert alle 15 Sekunden die Reise und schickt die Aufnahmen automatisch über Twitter raus.
«Delivery for Mr. Rajab» is a live mail art piece. A parcel with a hidden camera is sent by post from Julian Assange to Nabeel Rajab. Through a hole in the parcel, the camera documents and live-tweets its journey through the postal system, letting anyone online follow the parcels status in real-time. The images captured by the camera are transferred to this website and the Bitnk Twitter account in realtime. So, as the parcel slowly makes its way to Jaw Prison in Bahrain, anyone online can follow the parcel’s status in realtime.
Mr. Rajab ist Präsident des Bahrain Centre for Human Rights (BCHR) und sitzt zur Zeit als politischer Gefangener eine Strafe von zwei Jahren ab, weil er öffentlich gegen die Regierung protestiert hatte. Im Zuge des Arabischen Frühlings hatte sich 2011 in Bahrain Widerstand gegen König Hamad ibn Isa Al Chalifa gebildet; bis heute hält dieser jedoch an seiner Macht fest. !Mediengruppe Bitnik möchte mit der Aktion u. a. nachprüfen, ob das Paket seinen Zielort erreicht oder unterwegs verschwindet und die Kommunikation unterbunden wird.
!Mediengruppe Bitnik - Kunst als Systemtest
Nicht die erste Aktion dieser Art: Bitnik hatte bereits zuvor ein Paket an Assange in die Ecuadorianische Botschaft in London verschickt, das ebenfalls auf diese Weise von der Weltöffentlichkeit verfolgt worden konnte (und tatsächlich bei Assange ankam):
The parcel was a REAL_WORLD_PING, a SYSTEM_TEST, inserted into a highly tense diplomatic crisis. Julian Assange has been living at the Ecuadorian embassy in London since June 2012. Although he was granted political asylum by Ecuador in August 2012, he is unable to leave the embassy premises for fear of being arrested by UK authorities.
We wanted to see where the parcel would end up. Whether it would reach its destination. And which route it would take. Would it be removed from the postal system? Or would it successfully complete the system test and reach Julian Assange.
After aprox. 32 hours and a journey in various postal bags, vans and through delivery centres, the parcel was delivered to the Ecuadorian embassy in London in the afternoon of 17 January 2013. By that time several thousand people had gathered on Twitter to follow the tantalizing and intense journey. The experiment was crowned by Julian Assanges live performance for the camera.
Hinter !Mediengruppe Bitnik stecken die Künstler Domagoj Smoljo, Carmen Weisskopf, Adnan Hadzi und Daniel Ryser. Sie benutzen Hacking und moderne Überwachungsmethoden als künstlerische Strategie, um so “etablierte Strukturen und Mechanismen zu rekontextualisieren”. Ich find das wirklich sehr, sehr toll und verneige mich hiermit vor der großartigen Idee.
Auch Amnesty International setzt sich übrigens für die Freilassung Mr. Rajabs ein. Wer aktiv werden möchte, kann hier einen Appellbrief unterzeichnen.
